Business Distributors Ltd is one of very few remaining New Zealand owned technology suppliers of its size. BDL IT is its newest division, and right now it is a Christchurch operation - which is exactly how we want to start.
Offshore-owned providers can offer scale but often not relationships. A one-person local contractor offers the relationship but struggles when you need three engineers, a project manager and cover during annual leave. BDL IT sits in between: the backing of an established company, with a team small enough and close enough that your account manager's name is one you already know.
BDL IT builds on what the company has always done. For years BDL has supplied, financed and serviced the equipment New Zealand organisations rely on, with a support culture built around uptime rather than transactions. Extending that to servers, networks, Microsoft 365 and security was a short step, and one customers had been asking for.
We are deliberately growing the IT side one region at a time. Christchurch and Canterbury first, done properly, rather than a phone number in every city and an engineer in none of them.
How we work
- Plain English. Recommendations you can take to a board or a business owner without a translator.
- Proactive, not reactive. We are paid to prevent problems, so we would rather patch it than bill you for fixing it.
- Honest about what you do not need. If your current setup is fine, we will say so. It costs us a quote and earns a customer.
- Documented. Your environment is written down and the documentation is yours, whether you stay with us or not.
- Local decisions. No offshore head office deciding what New Zealand customers are allowed to have.

Being locally owned changes small things that turn out to matter: the person who quotes the work is the person you can ring afterwards, spare parts and loan equipment sit in a New Zealand warehouse, and support hours match your working day rather than someone else's.

BDL IT supports Christchurch organisations of most shapes - professional services firms, manufacturers, trades and construction, health practices, not-for-profits, and a long history with the education sector.
The common thread is not industry, it is size: organisations large enough that IT failing costs real money, and small enough that running a full internal IT department does not stack up.
Sustainability
BDL has run cartridge recycling and product stewardship programmes on the print side for years, including the HP Planet Partners programme. The same thinking applies to IT hardware: devices are wiped to a documented standard and then recycled or redeployed rather than landfilled, and we would rather extend the life of a machine than replace it because the calendar says so.
